BUILDING BLOCKS: NONTEXTILE PROJECT
What if we could change our clothes? To become our own designer. No sewing involved. With the discussion of sustainable practices and accessibility as a growing topic in the fashion industry, it is our role as designers to re-imagine how to construct our clothes. This project demonstrates a possible future where clothing is customizable. Like watch links, garments are built piece-by-piece, opening the way for the wearer to create pieces that adhere to their size and personal style. Each component is a building block, interlocking each segment to form new shapes and designs.
CONCEPT MODULE:
PENTAGONAL INTERLOCKING
Two separate mechanisms are at play within each component. The first involves linking slotted shape pentagons to form the striking vertebrae that lines the front, back, and sides of the garment.  The second is hidden inside: a large flap connects the bottom of a segment to another, molding it into a convex shape. Each connection adds stability and rigidity and also the ability for the wearer to decide the length and overall shape. Areas of the body that require movement, such as the arms, have an addition of mesh giving more flexibility to the wearer.
Materials used are foam and fiberglass screen mesh.
